This patch converts m32r to use asm-generic/ioctls.h instead of its own version. 2010-10-15m32r: restore _BLOCKABLEKyle McMartin
Commit a7f8388e accidentally removed it... Al explains: "Sorry, reordering breakage. In the signals tree here I have static inline void sig_set_blocked(struct sigset_t *set) ... and it's used all over the place (including quite a few places where we currently have sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, set, NULL), which is what it's equivalent to). 2010-10-07Fix IRQ flag handling namingDavid Howells
Fix the IRQ flag handling naming. In linux/irqflags.h under one configuration, it maps: local_irq_enable() -> raw_local_irq_enable() local_irq_disable() -> raw_local_irq_disable() local_irq_save() -> raw_local_irq_save() ... and under the other configuration, it maps: raw_local_irq_enable() -> local_irq_enable() raw_local_irq_disable() -> local_irq_disable() raw_local_irq_save() -> local_irq_save() ... This is quite confusing. There should be one set of names expected of the arch, and this should be wrapped to give another set of names that are expected by users of this facility. Change this to have the arch provide: flags = arch_local_save_flags() flags = arch_local_irq_save() arch_local_irq_restore(flags) arch_local_irq_disable() arch_local_irq_enable() arch_irqs_disabled_flags(flags) arch_irqs_disabled() arch_safe_halt() Then linux/irqflags.h wraps these to provide: raw_local_save_flags(flags) raw_local_irq_save(flags) raw_local_irq_restore(flags) raw_local_irq_disable() raw_local_irq_enable() raw_irqs_disabled_flags(flags) raw_irqs_disabled() raw_safe_halt() with type checking on the flags 'arguments', and then wraps those to provide: local_save_flags(flags) local_irq_save(flags) local_irq_restore(flags) local_irq_disable() local_irq_enable() irqs_disabled_flags(flags) irqs_disabled() safe_halt() with tracing included if enabled. The arch functions can now all be inline functions rather than some of them having to be macros. 2010-08-17Make do_execve() take a const filename pointerDavid Howells
Make do_execve() take a const filename pointer so that kernel_execve() compiles correctly on ARM: arch/arm/kernel/sys_arm.c:88: warning: passing argument 1 of 'do_execve' discards qualifiers from pointer target type This also requires the argv and envp arguments to be consted twice, once for the pointer array and once for the strings the array points to. This is because do_execve() passes a pointer to the filename (now const) to copy_strings_kernel(). A simpler alternative would be to cast the filename pointer in do_execve() when it's passed to copy_strings_kernel(). do_execve() may not change any of the strings it is passed as part of the argv or envp lists as they are some of them in .rodata, so marking these strings as const should be fine. Further kernel_execve() and sys_execve() need to be changed to match. This has been test built on x86_64, frv, arm and mips. 2010-08-10tty: Add EXTPROC support for LINEMODEhyc@symas.com
This patch is against the 2.6.34 source. Paraphrased from the 1989 BSD patch by David Borman @ cray.com: These are the changes needed for the kernel to support LINEMODE in the server. There is a new bit in the termios local flag word, EXTPROC. When this bit is set, several aspects of the terminal driver are disabled. Input line editing, character echo, and mapping of signals are all disabled. This allows the telnetd to turn off these functions when in linemode, but still keep track of what state the user wants the terminal to be in. New ioctl: TIOCSIG Generate a signal to processes in the current process group of the pty. There is a new mode for packet driver, the TIOCPKT_IOCTL bit. When packet mode is turned on in the pty, and the EXTPROC bit is set, then whenever the state of the pty is changed, the next read on the master side of the pty will have the TIOCPKT_IOCTL bit set. This allows the process on the server side of the pty to know when the state of the terminal has changed; it can then issue the appropriate ioctl to retrieve the new state. Since the original BSD patches accompanied the source code for telnet I've left that reference here, but obviously the feature is useful for any remote terminal protocol, including ssh. The corresponding feature has existed in the BSD tty driver since 1989. For historical reference, a good copy of the relevant files can be found here: http://anonsvn.mit.edu/viewvc/krb5/trunk/src/appl/telnet/?pathrev=17741 Signed-off-by: Howard Chu <hyc@symas.com> Cc: Alan Cox <alan@lxorguk.ukuu.org.uk> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>

As Jeff Dike pointed out, the Hayes ESP driver was removed in commit f53a2ade0bb9f2a81f473e6469155172a96b7c38, so these ioctl definitions should also be removed. This cleans up the remaining arch-specific locations of this ioctl value. Thanks to Arnd for pointing these out. 2010-08-03kbuild: allow assignment to {A,C}FLAGS_KERNEL on the command lineSam Ravnborg
It is now possible to assign options to AS and CC on the command line - which is only used for built-in code. {A,C}FLAGS_KERNEL was used both in the top-level Makefile in the arch makefiles, thus users had no way to specify additional options to AS, CC without overriding the original value. Introduce a new set of variables KBUILD_{A,C}FLAGS_KERNEL that is used by arch specific files and free up {A,C}FLAGS_KERNEL so they can be assigned on the command line. All arch Makefiles that used the old variables has been updated. 2010-08-03kbuild: allow assignment to {A,C,LD}FLAGS_MODULE on the command lineSam Ravnborg
It is now possible to assign options to AS, CC and LD on the command line - which is only used when building modules. {A,C,LD}FLAGS_MODULE was all used both in the top-level Makefile in the arch makefiles, thus users had no way to specify additional options to AS, CC, LD when building modules without overriding the original value. Introduce a new set of variables KBUILD_{A,C,LD}FLAGS_MODULE that is used by arch specific files and free up {A,C,LD}FLAGS_MODULE so they can be assigned on the command line. All arch Makefiles that used the old variables has been updated. Note: Previously we had a MODFLAGS variable for both AS and CC. But in favour of consistency this was dropped. So in some cases arch Makefile has one assignmnet replaced by two assignmnets. Note2: MODFLAGS was not documented and is dropped without any notice. I do not expect much/any breakage from this. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2010-03-13m32r: Convert m32r to use read/update_peristent_clockJohn Stultz
This patch converts the m32r architecture to use the generic read_persistent_clock and update_persistent_clock interfaces, reducing the amount of arch specific code we have to maintain, and allowing for further cleanups in the future. I have not built or tested this patch, so help from arch maintainers would be appreciated. 2010-03-12m32r: use generic ptrace_resume codeChristoph Hellwig
Use the generic ptrace_resume code for PTRACE_SYSCALL, PTRACE_CONT, PTRACE_KILL and PTRACE_SINGLESTEP. This implies defining arch_has_single_step in <asm/ptrace.h> and implementing the user_enable_single_step and user_disable_single_step functions, which also causes the breakpoint information to be cleared on fork, which could be considered a bug fix. Also the TIF_SYSCALL_TRACE thread flag is now cleared on PTRACE_KILL which it previously wasn't, which is consistent with all architectures using the modern ptrace code. The old code only disables the breakpoints on PTRACE_KILL, while after this patch this also happens for PTRACE_CONT and PTRACE_SYSCALL which matches the behaviour of the other architetures. I think this is a bugfixes, but please double verify this is correct. 2010-03-12Add generic sys_olduname()Christoph Hellwig
Add generic implementations of the old and really old uname system calls. 2010-03-12Add generic sys_ipc wrapperChristoph Hellwig
Add a generic implementation of the ipc demultiplexer syscall. Except for s390 and sparc64 all implementations of the sys_ipc are nearly identical. There are slight differences in the types of the parameters, where mips and powerpc as the only 64-bit architectures with sys_ipc use unsigned long for the "third" argument as it gets casted to a pointer later, while it traditionally is an "int" like most other paramters. frv goes even further and uses unsigned long for all parameters execept for "ptr" which is a pointer type everywhere. The change from int to unsigned long for "third" and back to "int" for the others on frv should be fine due to the in-register calling conventions for syscalls (we already had a similar issue with the generic sys_ptrace), but I'd prefer to have the arch maintainers looks over this in details. Except for that h8300, m68k and m68knommu lack an impplementation of the semtimedop sub call which this patch adds, and various architectures have gets used - at least on i386 it seems superflous as the compat code on x86-64 and ia64 doesn't even bother to implement it. 2010-02-20MM: Pass a PTE pointer to update_mmu_cache() rather than the PTE itselfRussell King
On VIVT ARM, when we have multiple shared mappings of the same file in the same MM, we need to ensure that we have coherency across all copies. We do this via make_coherent() by making the pages uncacheable. This used to work fine, until we allowed highmem with highpte - we now have a page table which is mapped as required, and is not available for modification via update_mmu_cache(). Ralf Beache suggested getting rid of the PTE value passed to update_mmu_cache(): On MIPS update_mmu_cache() calls __update_tlb() which walks pagetables to construct a pointer to the pte again. Passing a pte_t * is much more elegant. Maybe we might even replace the pte argument with the pte_t? Ben Herrenschmidt would also like the pte pointer for PowerPC: Passing the ptep in there is exactly what I want. I want that -instead- of the PTE value, because I have issue on some ppc cases, for I$/D$ coherency, where set_pte_at() may decide to mask out the _PAGE_EXEC. So, pass in the mapped page table pointer into update_mmu_cache(), and remove the PTE value, updating all implementations and call sites to suit.
