[ Upstream commit 922a9bd138101e3e5718f0f4d40dba68ef89bb43 ] gas supports several different forms for .section for ELF targets, including: .section NAME [, "FLAGS"[, @TYPE[,FLAG_SPECIFIC_ARGUMENTS]]] and: .section "NAME"[, #FLAGS...] In several places we use a mix of these two forms: .section NAME, #FLAGS... A current development snapshot of binutils (2.40.50.20230611) treats this mixed syntax as an error. Change to consistently use: .section NAME, "FLAGS" as is used elsewhere in the kernel. 2023-07-01mm: always expand the stack with the mmap write lock heldLinus Torvalds
commit 8d7071af890768438c14db6172cc8f9f4d04e184 upstream This finishes the job of always holding the mmap write lock when extending the user stack vma, and removes the 'write_locked' argument from the vm helper functions again. For some cases, we just avoid expanding the stack at all: drivers and page pinning really shouldn't be extending any stacks. Let's see if any strange users really wanted that. It's worth noting that architectures that weren't converted to the new lock_mm_and_find_vma() helper function are left using the legacy "expand_stack()" function, but it has been changed to drop the mmap_lock and take it for writing while expanding the vma. This makes it fairly straightforward to convert the remaining architectures. As a result of dropping and re-taking the lock, the calling conventions for this function have also changed, since the old vma may no longer be valid. So it will now return the new vma if successful, and NULL - and the lock dropped - if the area could not be extended. 2023-05-30m68k: Move signal frame following exception on 68020/030Finn Thain
commit b845b574f86dcb6a70dfa698aa87a237b0878d2a upstream. On 68030/020, an instruction such as, moveml %a2-%a3/%a5,%sp@- may cause a stack page fault during instruction execution (i.e. not at an instruction boundary) and produce a format 0xB exception frame. In this situation, the value of USP will be unreliable. If a signal is to be delivered following the exception, this USP value is used to calculate the location for a signal frame. This can result in a corrupted user stack. The corruption was detected in dash (actually in glibc) where it showed up as an intermittent "stack smashing detected" message and crash following signal delivery for SIGCHLD. It was hard to reproduce that failure because delivery of the signal raced with the page fault and because the kernel places an unpredictable gap of up to 7 bytes between the USP and the signal frame. A format 0xB exception frame can be produced by a bus error or an address error. The 68030 Users Manual says that address errors occur immediately upon detection during instruction prefetch. The instruction pipeline allows prefetch to overlap with other instructions, which means an address error can arise during the execution of a different instruction. So it seems likely that this patch may help in the address error case also. 2023-03-30m68k: Only force 030 bus error if PC not in exception tableMichael Schmitz
[ Upstream commit e36a82bebbf7da814530d5a179bef9df5934b717 ] __get_kernel_nofault() does copy data in supervisor mode when forcing a task backtrace log through /proc/sysrq_trigger. This is expected cause a bus error exception on e.g. NULL pointer dereferencing when logging a kernel task has no workqueue associated. This bus error ought to be ignored. Our 030 bus error handler is ill equipped to deal with this: Whenever ssw indicates a kernel mode access on a data fault, we don't even attempt to handle the fault and instead always send a SEGV signal (or panic). As a result, the check for exception handling at the fault PC (buried in send_sig_fault() which gets called from do_page_fault() eventually) is never used. In contrast, both 040 and 060 access error handlers do not care whether a fault happened on supervisor mode access, and will call do_page_fault() on those, ultimately honoring the exception table. Add a check in bus_error030 to call do_page_fault() in case we do have an entry for the fault PC in our exception table. I had attempted a fix for this earlier in 2019 that did rely on testing pagefault_disabled() (see link below) to achieve the same thing, but this patch should be more generic. 2022-10-02kbuild: remove head-y syntaxMasahiro Yamada
Kbuild puts the objects listed in head-y at the head of vmlinux. Conventionally, we do this for head*.S, which contains the kernel entry point. A counter approach is to control the section order by the linker script. Actually, the code marked as __HEAD goes into the ".head.text" section, which is placed before the normal ".text" section. I do not know if both of them are needed. From the build system perspective, head-y is not mandatory. If you can achieve the proper code placement by the linker script only, it would be cleaner. I collected the current head-y objects into head-object-list.txt. It is a whitelist. My hope is it will be reduced in the long run. 2022-10-02kbuild: use obj-y instead extra-y for objects placed at the headMasahiro Yamada
The objects placed at the head of vmlinux need special treatments: - arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile adds them to head-y in order to place them before other archives in the linker command line. - arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile adds them to extra-y instead of obj-y to avoid them going into built-in.a. This commit gets rid of the latter. Create vmlinux.a to collect all the objects that are unconditionally linked to vmlinux. The objects listed in head-y are moved to the head of vmlinux.a by using 'ar m'. With this, arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile can consistently use obj-y for builtin objects. There is no *.o that is directly linked to vmlinux. Drop unneeded code in scripts/clang-tools/gen_compile_commands.py. $(AR) mPi needs 'T' to workaround the llvm-ar bug. This is useful on !virt platforms for kexec, so change things from BI_VIRT_RNG_SEED to be BI_RNG_SEED, and simply remove BI_VIRT_RNG_SEED because it only ever lasted one release, and nothing is broken by not having it. At the same time, keep a comment noting that it's been removed, so that ID isn't reused. In addition, we previously documented 2-byte alignment, but 4-byte alignment is actually necessary, so update that comment. The RNG seed boot record is memzeroed after processing, in order to preserve forward secrecy. By saving the bootinfo for procfs prior to that, forward secrecy is violated, since it becomes possible to recover past states. So, save the bootinfo block only after first processing them. But if none is selected then nothing is included to supply the appropriate register and bit flags defines. Rearrange the includes so that at least one type is always included. At the very least the 68328 base type should be the fallback, so make that true. 2022-07-22PCI: Remove pci_get_legacy_ide_irq() and asm-generic/pci.hStafford Horne
pci_get_legacy_ide_irq() is only used on platforms that support PNP, so many architectures define it but never use it. Replace uses of it with ATA_PRIMARY_IRQ() and ATA_SECONDARY_IRQ(), which provide the same functionality. Now all the platforms enable ARCH_HAS_GET_PAGE_PROT. They define and export own vm_get_page_prot() whether custom or standard DECLARE_VM_GET_PAGE_PROT. Other virt VMs can pass RNG seeds via the "rng-seed" device tree property or via UEFI, but m68k doesn't have either. Instead it has its own bootinfo protocol. So this commit adds support for receiving a RNG seed from it, which will be used at the earliest possible time in boot, just like device tree.
