2015-06-23fs: cleanup slight list_entry abuseRasmus Villemoes
list_entry is just a wrapper for container_of, but it is arguably wrong (and slightly confusing) to use it when the pointed-to struct member is not a struct list_head. 2015-06-02writeback: separate out include/linux/backing-dev-defs.hTejun Heo
With the planned cgroup writeback support, backing-dev related declarations will be more widely used across block and cgroup; unfortunately, including backing-dev.h from include/linux/blkdev.h makes cyclic include dependency quite likely. This patch separates out backing-dev-defs.h which only has the essential definitions and updates blkdev.h to include it. c files which need access to more backing-dev details now include backing-dev.h directly. This takes backing-dev.h off the common include dependency chain making it a lot easier to use it across block and cgroup. v2: fs/fat build failure fixed. 2015-04-11direct_IO: use iov_iter_rw() instead of rw everywhereOmar Sandoval
The rw parameter to direct_IO is redundant with iov_iter->type, and treated slightly differently just about everywhere it's used: some users do rw & WRITE, and others do rw == WRITE where they should be doing a bitwise check. 2014-12-10fs/hfs/catalog.c: fix comparison bug in hfs_cat_keycmpRasmus Villemoes
Relying on the sign (after casting to int) of the difference of two quantities for comparison is usually wrong. For example, should a-b turn out to be 2^31, the return value of cmp(a,b) is -2^31; but that would also be the return value from cmp(b, a). So a compares less than b and b compares less than a. One can also easily find three values a,b,c such that a compares less than b, b compares less than c, but a does not compare less than c. 2014-04-03mm + fs: store shadow entries in page cacheJohannes Weiner
Reclaim will be leaving shadow entries in the page cache radix tree upon evicting the real page. As those pages are found from the LRU, an iput() can lead to the inode being freed concurrently. At this point, reclaim must no longer install shadow pages because the inode freeing code needs to ensure the page tree is really empty. Add an address_space flag, AS_EXITING, that the inode freeing code sets under the tree lock before doing the final truncate. Reclaim will check for this flag before installing shadow pages. 2014-03-13fs: push sync_filesystem() down to the file system's remount_fs()Theodore Ts'o
Previously, the no-op "mount -o mount /dev/xxx" operation when the file system is already mounted read-write causes an implied, unconditional syncfs(). This seems pretty stupid, and it's certainly documented or guaraunteed to do this, nor is it particularly useful, except in the case where the file system was mounted rw and is getting remounted read-only. However, it's possible that there might be some file systems that are actually depending on this behavior. In most file systems, it's probably fine to only call sync_filesystem() when transitioning from read-write to read-only, and there are some file systems where this is not needed at all (for example, for a pseudo-filesystem or something like romfs). 2013-06-29Don't pass inode to ->d_hash() and ->d_compare()Linus Torvalds
Instances either don't look at it at all (the majority of cases) or only want it to find the superblock (which can be had as dentry->d_sb). A few cases that want more are actually safe with dentry->d_inode - the only precaution needed is the check that it hadn't been replaced with NULL by rmdir() or by overwriting rename(), which case should be simply treated as cache miss. 2013-03-03fs: Limit sys_mount to only request filesystem modules.Eric W. Biederman
Modify the request_module to prefix the file system type with "fs-" and add aliases to all of the filesystems that can be built as modules to match. A common practice is to build all of the kernel code and leave code that is not commonly needed as modules, with the result that many users are exposed to any bug anywhere in the kernel. Looking for filesystems with a fs- prefix limits the pool of possible modules that can be loaded by mount to just filesystems trivially making things safer with no real cost. Using aliases means user space can control the policy of which filesystem modules are auto-loaded by editing /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf with blacklist and alias directives. Allowing simple, safe, well understood work-arounds to known problematic software. This also addresses a rare but unfortunate problem where the filesystem name is not the same as it's module name and module auto-loading would not work. While writing this patch I saw a handful of such cases. The most significant being autofs that lives in the module autofs4. This is relevant to user namespaces because we can reach the request module in get_fs_type() without having any special permissions, and people get uncomfortable when a user specified string (in this case the filesystem type) goes all of the way to request_module. After having looked at this issue I don't think there is any particular reason to perform any filtering or permission checks beyond making it clear in the module request that we want a filesystem module. The common pattern in the kernel is to call request_module() without regards to the users permissions. In general all a filesystem module does once loaded is call register_filesystem() and go to sleep. Which means there is not much attack surface exposed by loading a filesytem module unless the filesystem is mounted. In a user namespace filesystems are not mounted unless .fs_flags = FS_USERNS_MOUNT, which most filesystems do not set today. As it is, we have a situation when file_table.c is about handling of struct file and file.c is about handling of descriptor tables; the reasons are historical - file_table.c used to be about a static array of struct file we used to have way back). A lot of stray ends got cleaned up and converted to saner primitives, disgusting mess in android/binder.c is still disgusting, but at least doesn't poke so much in descriptor table guts anymore. A bunch of relatively minor races got fixed in process, plus an ext4 struct file leak. - related thing - fget_light() partially unuglified; see fdget() in there (and yes, it generates the code as good as we used to have). - also related - bits of Cyrill's procfs stuff that got entangled into that work; _not_ all of it, just the initial move to fs/proc/fd.c and switch of fdinfo to seq_file. - Alex's fs/coredump.c spiltoff - the same story, had been easier to take that commit than mess with conflicts. The rest is a separate pile, this was just a mechanical code movement. - a few misc patches all over the place. Not all for this cycle, there'll be more (and quite a few currently sit in akpm's tree)." Fix up trivial conflicts in the android binder driver, and some fairly simple conflicts due to two different changes to the sock_alloc_file() interface ("take descriptor handling from sock_alloc_file() to callers" vs "net: Providing protocol type via system.sockprotoname xattr of /proc/PID/fd entries" adding a dentry name to the socket) * 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs: (72 commits) MAX_LFS_FILESIZE should be a loff_t compat: fs: Generic compat_sys_sendfile implementation fs: push rcu_barrier() from deactivate_locked_super() to filesystems btrfs: reada_extent doesn't need kref for refcount coredump: move core dump functionality into its own file coredump: prevent double-free on an error path in core dumper usb/gadget: fix misannotations fcntl: fix misannotations ceph: don't abuse d_delete() on failure exits hypfs: ->d_parent is never NULL or negative vfs: delete surplus inode NULL check switch simple cases of fget_light to fdget new helpers: fdget()/fdput() switch o2hb_region_dev_write() to fget_light() proc_map_files_readdir(): don't bother with grabbing files make get_file() return its argument vhost_set_vring(): turn pollstart/pollstop into bool switch prctl_set_mm_exe_file() to fget_light() switch xfs_find_handle() to fget_light() switch xfs_swapext() to fget_light() ...
2012-10-02fs: push rcu_barrier() from deactivate_locked_super() to filesystemsKirill A. Shutemov
There's no reason to call rcu_barrier() on every deactivate_locked_super(). We only need to make sure that all delayed rcu free inodes are flushed before we destroy related cache. Removing rcu_barrier() from deactivate_locked_super() affects some fast paths. E.g. on my machine exit_group() of a last process in IPC namespace takes 0.07538s. rcu_barrier() takes 0.05188s of that time. Signed-off-by: Kirill A. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace Pull user namespace changes from Eric Biederman: "This is a mostly modest set of changes to enable basic user namespace support. This allows the code to code to compile with user namespaces enabled and removes the assumption there is only the initial user namespace. Everything is converted except for the most complex of the filesystems: autofs4, 9p, afs, ceph, cifs, coda, fuse, gfs2, ncpfs, nfs, ocfs2 and xfs as those patches need a bit more review. The strategy is to push kuid_t and kgid_t values are far down into subsystems and filesystems as reasonable. Leaving the make_kuid and from_kuid operations to happen at the edge of userspace, as the values come off the disk, and as the values come in from the network. Letting compile type incompatible compile errors (present when user namespaces are enabled) guide me to find the issues. The most tricky areas have been the places where we had an implicit union of uid and gid values and were storing them in an unsigned int. Those places were converted into explicit unions. I made certain to handle those places with simple trivial patches. Out of that work I discovered we have generic interfaces for storing quota by projid. I had never heard of the project identifiers before. Adding full user namespace support for project identifiers accounts for most of the code size growth in my git tree. Ultimately there will be work to relax privlige checks from "capable(FOO)" to "ns_capable(user_ns, FOO)" where it is safe allowing root in a user names to do those things that today we only forbid to non-root users because it will confuse suid root applications. While I was pushing kuid_t and kgid_t changes deep into the audit code I made a few other cleanups. I capitalized on the fact we process netlink messages in the context of the message sender. I removed usage of NETLINK_CRED, and started directly using current->tty. Some of these patches have also made it into maintainer trees, with no problems from identical code from different trees showing up in linux-next. After reading through all of this code I feel like I might be able to win a game of kernel trivial pursuit." Pull workqueue changes from Tejun Heo: "This is workqueue updates for v3.7-rc1. A lot of activities this round including considerable API and behavior cleanups. * delayed_work combines a timer and a work item. The handling of the timer part has always been a bit clunky leading to confusing cancelation API with weird corner-case behaviors. delayed_work is updated to use new IRQ safe timer and cancelation now works as expected. * Another deficiency of delayed_work was lack of the counterpart of mod_timer() which led to cancel+queue combinations or open-coded timer+work usages. mod_delayed_work[_on]() are added. These two delayed_work changes make delayed_work provide interface and behave like timer which is executed with process context. * A work item could be executed concurrently on multiple CPUs, which is rather unintuitive and made flush_work() behavior confusing and half-broken under certain circumstances. This problem doesn't exist for non-reentrant workqueues. While non-reentrancy check isn't free, the overhead is incurred only when a work item bounces across different CPUs and even in simulated pathological scenario the overhead isn't too high. All workqueues are made non-reentrant. This removes the distinction between flush_[delayed_]work() and flush_[delayed_]_work_sync(). The former is now as strong as the latter and the specified work item is guaranteed to have finished execution of any previous queueing on return. * In addition to the various bug fixes, Lai redid and simplified CPU hotplug handling significantly. * Joonsoo introduced system_highpri_wq and used it during CPU hotplug. There are two merge commits - one to pull in IRQ safe timer from tip/timers/core and the other to pull in CPU hotplug fixes from wq/for-3.6-fixes as Lai's hotplug restructuring depended on them." Fixed a number of trivial conflicts, but the more interesting conflicts were silent ones where the deprecated interfaces had been used by new code in the merge window, and thus didn't cause any real data conflicts. Tejun pointed out a few of them, I fixed a couple more. * 'for-3.7' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tj/wq: (46 commits) workqueue: remove spurious WARN_ON_ONCE(in_irq()) from try_to_grab_pending() workqueue: use cwq_set_max_active() helper for workqueue_set_max_active() workqueue: introduce cwq_set_max_active() helper for thaw_workqueues() workqueue: remove @delayed from cwq_dec_nr_in_flight() workqueue: fix possible stall on try_to_grab_pending() of a delayed work item workqueue: use hotcpu_notifier() for workqueue_cpu_down_callback() workqueue: use __cpuinit instead of __devinit for cpu callbacks workqueue: rename manager_mutex to assoc_mutex workqueue: WORKER_REBIND is no longer necessary for idle rebinding workqueue: WORKER_REBIND is no longer necessary for busy rebinding workqueue: reimplement idle worker rebinding workqueue: deprecate __cancel_delayed_work() workqueue: reimplement cancel_delayed_work() using try_to_grab_pending() workqueue: use mod_delayed_work() instead of __cancel + queue workqueue: use irqsafe timer for delayed_work workqueue: clean up delayed_work initializers and add missing one workqueue: make deferrable delayed_work initializer names consistent workqueue: cosmetic whitespace updates for macro definitions workqueue: deprecate system_nrt[_freezable]_wq workqueue: deprecate flush[_delayed]_work_sync() ...

2012-08-20workqueue: deprecate flush[_delayed]_work_sync()Tejun Heo
flush[_delayed]_work_sync() are now spurious. Mark them deprecated and convert all users to flush[_delayed]_work(). If you're cc'd and wondering what's going on: Now all workqueues are non-reentrant and the regular flushes guarantee that the work item is not pending or running on any CPU on return, so there's no reason to use the sync flushes at all and they're going away. 2012-08-04hfs: nuke write_super from commentsArtem Bityutskiy
The '->write_super' superblock method is gone, and this patch removes all the references to 'write_super' from hfs. Signed-off-by: Artem Bityutskiy <artem.bityutskiy@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2012-07-22hfs: get rid of hfs_sync_superArtem Bityutskiy
This patch makes hfs stop using the VFS '->write_super()' method along with the 's_dirt' superblock flag, because they are on their way out. The whole "superblock write-out" VFS infrastructure is served by the 'sync_supers()' kernel thread, which wakes up every 5 (by default) seconds and writes out all dirty superblocks using the '->write_super()' call-back. But the problem with this thread is that it wastes power by waking up the system every 5 seconds, even if there are no diry superblocks, or there are no client file-systems which would need this (e.g., btrfs does not use '->write_super()'). So we want to kill it completely and thus, we need to make file-systems to stop using the '->write_super()' VFS service, and then remove it together with the kernel thread. Tested using fsstress from the LTP project. Signed-off-by: Artem Bityutskiy <artem.bityutskiy@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2012-07-22hfs: introduce VFS superblock object back-referenceArtem Bityutskiy
Add an 'sb' VFS superblock back-reference to the 'struct hfs_sb_info' data structure - we will need to find the VFS superblock from a 'struct hfs_sb_info' object in the next patch, so this change is jut a preparation. Remove few useless newlines while on it. Signed-off-by: Artem Bityutskiy <artem.bityutskiy@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2012-07-22hfs: simplify a bit checking for R/OArtem Bityutskiy

2012-07-22hfs: remove extra mdb write on unmountArtem Bityutskiy
HFS calls 'hfs_write_super()' from 'hfs_put_super()' in order to write the MDB to the media. However, it is not needed because VFS calls '->sync_fs()' before calling '->put_super()' - so by the time we are in 'hfs_write_super()', the MDB is already synchronized.
