git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs Pull mount flag updates from Al Viro: "Another chunk of fmount preparations from dhowells; only trivial conflicts for that part. It separates MS_... bits (very grotty mount(2) ABI) from the struct super_block ->s_flags (kernel-internal, only a small subset of MS_... stuff). It's purely mechanical and it's better done after the merge, so if you could run something like list=$(for i in MS_RDONLY MS_NOSUID MS_NODEV MS_NOEXEC MS_SYNCHRONOUS MS_MANDLOCK MS_DIRSYNC MS_NOATIME MS_NODIRATIME MS_SILENT MS_POSIXACL MS_KERNMOUNT MS_I_VERSION MS_LAZYTIME; do git grep -l $i fs drivers/staging/lustre drivers/mtd ipc mm include/linux; done|sort|uniq|grep -v '^fs/namespace.c$') sed -i -e 's/\<MS_RDONLY\>/SB_RDONLY/g' \ -e 's/\<MS_NOSUID\>/SB_NOSUID/g' \ -e 's/\<MS_NODEV\>/SB_NODEV/g' \ -e 's/\<MS_NOEXEC\>/SB_NOEXEC/g' \ -e 's/\<MS_SYNCHRONOUS\>/SB_SYNCHRONOUS/g' \ -e 's/\<MS_MANDLOCK\>/SB_MANDLOCK/g' \ -e 's/\<MS_DIRSYNC\>/SB_DIRSYNC/g' \ -e 's/\<MS_NOATIME\>/SB_NOATIME/g' \ -e 's/\<MS_NODIRATIME\>/SB_NODIRATIME/g' \ -e 's/\<MS_SILENT\>/SB_SILENT/g' \ -e 's/\<MS_POSIXACL\>/SB_POSIXACL/g' \ -e 's/\<MS_KERNMOUNT\>/SB_KERNMOUNT/g' \ -e 's/\<MS_I_VERSION\>/SB_I_VERSION/g' \ -e 's/\<MS_LAZYTIME\>/SB_LAZYTIME/g' \ $list and commit it with something along the lines of 'convert filesystems away from use of MS_... constants' as commit message, it would save a quite a bit of headache next cycle" * 'work.mount' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs: VFS: Differentiate mount flags (MS_*) from internal superblock flags VFS: Convert sb->s_flags & MS_RDONLY to sb_rdonly(sb) vfs: Add sb_rdonly(sb) to query the MS_RDONLY flag on s_flags
2017-08-01fs: convert a pile of fsync routines to errseq_t based reportingJeff Layton
This patch converts most of the in-kernel filesystems that do writeback out of the pagecache to report errors using the errseq_t-based infrastructure that was recently added. This allows them to report errors once for each open file description. Most filesystems have a fairly straightforward fsync operation. They call filemap_write_and_wait_range to write back all of the data and wait on it, and then (sometimes) sync out the metadata. For those filesystems this is a straightforward conversion from calling filemap_write_and_wait_range in their fsync operation to calling file_write_and_wait_range. 2016-06-10vfs: make the string hashes salt the hashLinus Torvalds
We always mixed in the parent pointer into the dentry name hash, but we did it late at lookup time. It turns out that we can simplify that lookup-time action by salting the hash with the parent pointer early instead of late. A few other users of our string hashes also wanted to mix in their own pointers into the hash, and those are updated to use the same mechanism. Hash users that don't have any particular initial salt can just use the NULL pointer as a no-salt. 2016-05-28hpfs: implement the show_options methodMikulas Patocka
The HPFS filesystem used generic_show_options to produce string that is displayed in /proc/mounts. However, there is a problem that the options may disappear after remount. If we mount the filesystem with option1 and then remount it with option2, /proc/mounts should show both option1 and option2, however it only shows option2 because the whole option string is replaced with replace_mount_options in hpfs_remount_fs. To fix this bug, implement the hpfs_show_options function that prints options that are currently selected. 2016-05-28hpfs: fix remount failure when there are no options changedMikulas Patocka
Commit ce657611baf9 ("hpfs: kstrdup() out of memory handling") checks if the kstrdup function returns NULL due to out-of-memory condition. However, if we are remounting a filesystem with no change to filesystem-specific options, the parameter data is NULL. In this case, kstrdup returns NULL (because it was passed NULL parameter), although no out of memory condition exists. The mount syscall then fails with ENOMEM. This patch fixes the bug. We fail with ENOMEM only if data is non-NULL. The patch also changes the call to replace_mount_options - if we didn't pass any filesystem-specific options, we don't call replace_mount_options (thus we don't erase existing reported options). 2016-05-12hpfs: switch to ->iterate_shared()Al Viro

2016-02-27hpfs: don't truncate the file when delete failsMikulas Patocka
The delete opration can allocate additional space on the HPFS filesystem due to btree split. The HPFS driver checks in advance if there is available space, so that it won't corrupt the btree if we run out of space during splitting. If there is not enough available space, the HPFS driver attempted to truncate the file, but this results in a deadlock since the commit 7dd29d8d865efdb00c0542a5d2c87af8c52ea6c7 ("HPFS: Introduce a global mutex and lock it on every callback from VFS"). This patch removes the code that tries to truncate the file and -ENOSPC is returned instead. If the user hits -ENOSPC on delete, he should try to delete other files (that are stored in a leaf btree node), so that the delete operation will make some space for deleting the file stored in non-leaf btree node. 2016-01-14kmemcg: account certain kmem allocations to memcgVladimir Davydov
Mark those kmem allocations that are known to be easily triggered from userspace as __GFP_ACCOUNT/SLAB_ACCOUNT, which makes them accounted to memcg. For the list, see below: - threadinfo - task_struct - task_delay_info - pid - cred - mm_struct - vm_area_struct and vm_region (nommu) - anon_vma and anon_vma_chain - signal_struct - sighand_struct - fs_struct - files_struct - fdtable and fdtable->full_fds_bits - dentry and external_name - inode for all filesystems. This is the most tedious part, because most filesystems overwrite the alloc_inode method. The list is far from complete, so feel free to add more objects. Nevertheless, it should be close to "account everything" approach and keep most workloads within bounds. Malevolent users will be able to breach the limit, but this was possible even with the former "account everything" approach (simply because it did not account everything in fact). That probably should've been 5 or 6 separate branches, but by the time I'd realized how large and mixed that bag had become it had been too close to -final to play with rebasing. Some fs/namei.c cleanups there, memdup_user_nul() introduction and switching open-coded instances, burying long-dead code, whack-a-mole of various kinds, several new helpers for ->llseek(), assorted cleanups and fixes from various people, etc. One piece probably deserves special mention - Neil's lookup_one_len_unlocked(). That, of course, means that it's not useful for any directory modifications, but things like getting inode attributes in nfds readdirplus are fine with that. 2014-04-03mm + fs: store shadow entries in page cacheJohannes Weiner
Reclaim will be leaving shadow entries in the page cache radix tree upon evicting the real page. As those pages are found from the LRU, an iput() can lead to the inode being freed concurrently. At this point, reclaim must no longer install shadow pages because the inode freeing code needs to ensure the page tree is really empty. Add an address_space flag, AS_EXITING, that the inode freeing code sets under the tree lock before doing the final truncate. Reclaim will check for this flag before installing shadow pages. 2014-03-13fs: push sync_filesystem() down to the file system's remount_fs()Theodore Ts'o
Previously, the no-op "mount -o mount /dev/xxx" operation when the file system is already mounted read-write causes an implied, unconditional syncfs(). This seems pretty stupid, and it's certainly documented or guaraunteed to do this, nor is it particularly useful, except in the case where the file system was mounted rw and is getting remounted read-only. However, it's possible that there might be some file systems that are actually depending on this behavior. In most file systems, it's probably fine to only call sync_filesystem() when transitioning from read-write to read-only, and there are some file systems where this is not needed at all (for example, for a pseudo-filesystem or something like romfs). 2014-02-02hpfs: optimize quad buffer loadingMikulas Patocka
HPFS needs to load 4 consecutive 512-byte sectors when accessing the directory nodes or bitmaps. We can't switch to 2048-byte block size because files are allocated in the units of 512-byte sectors. Previously, the driver would allocate a 2048-byte area using kmalloc, copy the data from four buffers to this area and eventually copy them back if they were modified. In the current implementation of the buffer cache, buffers are allocated in the pagecache. That means that 4 consecutive 512-byte buffers are stored in consecutive areas in the kernel address space. So, we don't need to allocate extra memory and copy the content of the buffers there. This patch optimizes the code to avoid copying the buffers. It checks if the four buffers are stored in contiguous memory - if they are not, it falls back to allocating a 2048-byte area and copying data there. 2014-02-02hpfs: remember free spaceMikulas Patocka
Previously, hpfs scanned all bitmaps each time the user asked for free space using statfs. This patch changes it so that hpfs scans the bitmaps only once, remembes the free space and on next invocation of statfs it returns the value instantly. New versions of wine are hammering on the statfs syscall very heavily, making some games unplayable when they're stored on hpfs, with load times in minutes. This should be backported to the stable kernels because it fixes user-visible problem (excessive level load times in wine).
