2018-05-11do d_instantiate/unlock_new_inode combinations safelyAl Viro
For anything NFS-exported we do _not_ want to unlock new inode before it has grown an alias; original set of fixes got the ordering right, but missed the nasty complication in case of lockdep being enabled - unlock_new_inode() does lockdep_annotate_inode_mutex_key(inode) which can only be done before anyone gets a chance to touch ->i_mutex. Unfortunately, flipping the order and doing unlock_new_inode() before d_instantiate() opens a window when mkdir can race with open-by-fhandle on a guessed fhandle, leading to multiple aliases for a directory inode and all the breakage that follows from that. Correct solution: a new primitive (d_instantiate_new()) combining these two in the right order - lockdep annotate, then d_instantiate(), then the rest of unlock_new_inode(). All combinations of d_instantiate() with unlock_new_inode() should be converted to that. 2016-09-27fs: Replace CURRENT_TIME with current_time() for inode timestampsDeepa Dinamani
CURRENT_TIME macro is not appropriate for filesystems as it doesn't use the right granularity for filesystem timestamps. Use current_time() instead. CURRENT_TIME is also not y2038 safe. This is also in preparation for the patch that transitions vfs timestamps to use 64 bit time and hence make them y2038 safe. As part of the effort current_time() will be extended to do range checks. Hence, it is necessary for all file system timestamps to use current_time(). Also, current_time() will be transitioned along with vfs to be y2038 safe. Note that whenever a single call to current_time() is used to change timestamps in different inodes, it is because they share the same time granularity. 2016-04-04mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macrosKirill A. Shutemov
PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. The changes are pretty straight-forward: - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN}; - page_cache_get() -> get_page(); - page_cache_release() -> put_page(); This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files. I've called spatch for them manually. The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later. There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll fix them manually in a separate patch. Comments and documentation also will be addressed with the separate patch. virtual patch @@ expression E; @@ - E << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ expression E; @@ - E >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT + PAGE_SHIFT @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SIZE + PAGE_SIZE @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_MASK + PAGE_MASK @@ expression E; @@ - PAGE_CACHE_ALIGN(E) + PAGE_ALIGN(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_get(E) + get_page(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_release(E) + put_page(E) Signed-off-by: Kirill A. 2015-12-08replace ->follow_link() with new method that could stay in RCU modeAl Viro
new method: ->get_link(); replacement of ->follow_link(). The differences are: * inode and dentry are passed separately * might be called both in RCU and non-RCU mode; the former is indicated by passing it a NULL dentry. * when called that way it isn't allowed to block and should return ERR_PTR(-ECHILD) if it needs to be called in non-RCU mode. It's a flagday change - the old method is gone, all in-tree instances converted. Conversion isn't hard; said that, so far very few instances do not immediately bail out when called in RCU mode. 2015-06-25NILFS2: support NFSv2 exportNeilBrown
The "fh_len" passed to ->fh_to_* is not guaranteed to be that same as that returned by encode_fh - it may be larger. 2014-12-10nilfs2: fix the nilfs_iget() vs. nilfs_new_inode() racesRyusuke Konishi
Same story as in commit 41080b5a2401 ("nfsd race fixes: ext2") (similar ext2 fix) except that nilfs2 needs to use insert_inode_locked4() instead of insert_inode_locked() and a bug of a check for dead inodes needs to be fixed. If nilfs_iget() is called from nfsd after nilfs_new_inode() calls insert_inode_locked4(), nilfs_iget() will wait for unlock_new_inode() at the end of nilfs_mkdir()/nilfs_create()/etc to unlock the inode. If nilfs_iget() is called before nilfs_new_inode() calls insert_inode_locked4(), it will create an in-core inode and read its data from the on-disk inode. But, nilfs_iget() will find i_nlink equals zero and fail at nilfs_read_inode_common(), which will lead it to call iget_failed() and cleanly fail. However, this sanity check doesn't work as expected for reused on-disk inodes because they leave a non-zero value in i_mode field and it hinders the test of i_nlink. This patch also fixes the issue by removing the test on i_mode that nilfs2 doesn't need. 2012-05-10vfs: make it possible to access the dentry hash/len as one 64-bit entryLinus Torvalds
This allows comparing hash and len in one operation on 64-bit architectures. Right now only __d_lookup_rcu() takes advantage of this, since that is the case we care most about. The use of anonymous struct/unions hides the alternate 64-bit approach from most users, the exception being a few cases where we initialize a 'struct qstr' with a static initializer. This makes the problematic cases use a new QSTR_INIT() helper function for that (but initializing just the name pointer with a "{ .name = xyzzy }" initializer remains valid, as does just copying another qstr structure). 2011-03-09nilfs2: get rid of nilfs_sb_info structureRyusuke Konishi
This directly uses sb->s_fs_info to keep a nilfs filesystem object and fully removes the intermediate nilfs_sb_info structure. With this change, the hierarchy of on-memory structures of nilfs will be simplified as follows: Before: super_block -> nilfs_sb_info -> the_nilfs -> cptree --+-> nilfs_root (current file system) +-> nilfs_root (snapshot A) +-> nilfs_root (snapshot B) : -> nilfs_sc_info (log writer structure) After: super_block -> the_nilfs -> cptree --+-> nilfs_root (current file system) +-> nilfs_root (snapshot A) +-> nilfs_root (snapshot B) : -> nilfs_sc_info (log writer structure) The reason why we didn't design so from the beginning is because the initial shape also differed from the above. The early hierachy was composed of "per-mount-point" super_block -> nilfs_sb_info pairs and a shared nilfs object. On the kernel 2.6.37, it was changed to the current shape in order to unify super block instances into one per device, and this cleanup became applicable as the result. 2010-10-23nilfs2: deny write access to inodes in snapshotsRyusuke Konishi
Snapshots of nilfs are read-only. After super block instances (sb) will be unified, nilfs will need to check write access by a way other than implicit test with IS_RDONLY(inode). This is because IS_RDONLY() refers to MS_RDONLY bit of inode->i_sb->s_flags and it will become inaccurate after the unification of sb.
