2011-02-23drm: mm: add helper to unwind scan stateDaniel Vetter
With the switch to implicit free space accounting one pointer got unused when scanning. Use it to create a single-linked list to ensure correct unwinding of the scan state. Signed-off-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch> Signed-off-by: Dave Airlie <airlied@redhat.com>
2011-02-23drm: mm: add api for embedding struct drm_mm_nodeDaniel Vetter
The old api has a two-step process: First search for a suitable free hole, then allocate from that specific hole. No user used this to do anything clever. So drop it for the embeddable variant of the drm_mm api (the old one retains this ability, for the time being). With struct drm_mm_node embedded, we cannot track allocations anymore by checking for a NULL pointer. So keep track of this and add a small helper drm_mm_node_allocated. Also add a function to move allocations between different struct drm_mm_node. v2: Implement suggestions by Chris Wilson. 2011-02-23drm: mm: track free areas implicitlyDaniel Vetter
The idea is to track free holes implicitly by marking the allocation immediatly preceeding a hole. To avoid an ugly corner case add a dummy head_node to struct drm_mm to track the hole that spans to complete allocation area when the memory manager is empty. To guarantee that there's always a preceeding/following node (that might be marked as hole_follows == 1), move the mm->node_list list_head to the head_node. The main allocator and fair-lru scan code actually becomes simpler. Only the debug code slightly suffers because free areas are no longer explicit. Also add drm_mm_for_each_node (which will be much more useful when struct drm_mm_node is embeddable). 2011-02-23drm/nouveau: don't munge in drm_mm internalsDaniel Vetter
Nouveau was checking drm_mm internals on teardown to see whether the memory manager was initialized. Hide these internals in a small inline helper function. 2011-02-07drm: rework PCI/platform driver interface.Dave Airlie
This abstracts the pci/platform interface out a step further, we can go further but this is far enough for now to allow USB to be plugged in. The drivers now just call the init code directly for their device type. Signed-off-by: Dave Airlie <airlied@redhat.com>
2011-02-07drm: dumb scanout create/mmap for intel/radeon (v3)Dave Airlie
This is just an idea that might or might not be a good idea, it basically adds two ioctls to create a dumb and map a dumb buffer suitable for scanout. The handle can be passed to the KMS ioctls to create a framebuffer. It looks to me like it would be useful in the following cases: a) in development drivers - we can always provide a shadowfb fallback. b) libkms users - we can clean up libkms a lot and avoid linking to libdrm_*. c) plymouth via libkms is a lot easier. Userspace bits would be just calls + mmaps. We could probably mark these handles somehow as not being suitable for acceleartion so as top stop people who are dumber than dumb. 2011-02-03tracing: Replace syscall_meta_data struct array with pointer arraySteven Rostedt
Currently the syscall_meta structures for the syscall tracepoints are placed in the __syscall_metadata section, and at link time, the linker makes one large array of all these syscall metadata structures. On boot up, this array is read (much like the initcall sections) and the syscall data is processed. The problem is that there is no guarantee that gcc will place complex structures nicely together in an array format. Two structures in the same file may be placed awkwardly, because gcc has no clue that they are suppose to be in an array. A hack was used previous to force the alignment to 4, to pack the structures together. But this caused alignment issues with other architectures (sparc). Instead of packing the structures into an array, the structures' addresses are now put into the __syscall_metadata section. As pointers are always the natural alignment, gcc should always pack them tightly together (otherwise initcall, extable, etc would also fail). By having the pointers to the structures in the section, we can still iterate the trace_events without causing unnecessary alignment problems with other architectures, or depending on the current behaviour of gcc that will likely change in the future just to tick us kernel developers off a little more. The __syscall_metadata section is also moved into the .init.data section as it is now only needed at boot up. Suggested-by: David Miller <davem@davemloft.net> Acked-by: David S. 2011-02-03tracepoints: Fix section alignment using pointer arrayMathieu Desnoyers
Make the tracepoints more robust, making them solid enough to handle compiler changes by not relying on anything based on compiler-specific behavior with respect to structure alignment. Implement an approach proposed by David Miller: use an array of const pointers to refer to the individual structures, and export this pointer array through the linker script rather than the structures per se. It will consume 32 extra bytes per tracepoint (24 for structure padding and 8 for the pointers), but are less likely to break due to compiler changes. History: commit 7e066fb8 tracepoints: add DECLARE_TRACE() and DEFINE_TRACE() added the aligned(32) type and variable attribute to the tracepoint structures to deal with gcc happily aligning statically defined structures on 32-byte multiples. One attempt was to use a 8-byte alignment for tracepoint structures by applying both the variable and type attribute to tracepoint structures definitions and declarations. It worked fine with gcc 4.5.1, but broke with gcc 4.4.4 and 4.4.5. The reason is that the "aligned" attribute only specify the _minimum_ alignment for a structure, leaving both the compiler and the linker free to align on larger multiples. Because tracepoint.c expects the structures to be placed as an array within each section, up-alignment cause NULL-pointer exceptions due to the extra unexpected padding. Currently the trace_event structures are placed in the _ftrace_events section, and at link time, the linker makes one large array of all the trace_event structures. On boot up, this array is read (much like the initcall sections) and the events are processed. The problem is that there is no guarantee that gcc will place complex structures nicely together in an array format. Two structures in the same file may be placed awkwardly, because gcc has no clue that they are suppose to be in an array. 2011-02-02memcg: prevent endless loop when charging huge pages to near-limit groupJohannes Weiner
If reclaim after a failed charging was unsuccessful, the limits are checked again, just in case they settled by means of other tasks. This is all fine as long as every charge is of size PAGE_SIZE, because in that case, being below the limit means having at least PAGE_SIZE bytes available. But with transparent huge pages, we may end up in an endless loop where charging and reclaim fail, but we keep going because the limits are not yet exceeded, although not allowing for a huge page. Fix this up by explicitely checking for enough room, not just whether we are within limits. 2011-01-31drm/i915: Suppress spurious vblank interruptsChris Wilson
Hugh Dickins found that characters in xterm were going missing and oft delayed. Being the curious type, he managed to associate this with the new high-precision vblank patches; disabling these he found, restored the orderliness of his characters. The oddness begins when one realised that Hugh was not using vblanks at all on his system (fvwm and some xterms). Instead, all he had to go on were warning of a pipe underrun, curiously enough at around 60Hz. He poked and found that in addition to the underrun warning, the hardware was flagging the start of a new frame, a vblank, which in turn was kicking off the pending vblank processing code. There is little we can do for the underruns on Hugh's machine, a Crestline [965GM], which must have its FIFO watermarks set to 8. However, we do not need to process the vblank if we know that they are disabled... Reported-by: Hugh Dickins <hughd@google.com> Signed-off-by: Chris Wilson <chris@chris-wilson.co.uk>
2011-01-30net: Add compat ioctl support for the ipv4 multicast ioctl SIOCGETSGCNTEric W. Biederman
SIOCGETSGCNT is not a unique ioctl value as it it maps tio SIOCPROTOPRIVATE +1, which unfortunately means the existing infrastructure for compat networking ioctls is insufficient. A trivial compact ioctl implementation would conflict with: SIOCAX25ADDUID SIOCAIPXPRISLT SIOCGETSGCNT_IN6 SIOCGETSGCNT SIOCRSSCAUSE SIOCX25SSUBSCRIP SIOCX25SDTEFACILITIES To make this work I have updated the compat_ioctl decode path to mirror the the normal ioctl decode path. I have added an ipv4 inet_compat_ioctl function so that I can have ipv4 specific compat ioctls. I have added a compat_ioctl function into struct proto so I can break out ioctls by which kind of ip socket I am using. I have added a compat_raw_ioctl function because SIOCGETSGCNT only works on raw sockets. I have added a ipmr_compat_ioctl that mirrors the normal ipmr_ioctl. This was necessary because unfortunately the struct layout for the SIOCGETSGCNT has unsigned longs in it so changes between 32bit and 64bit kernels. This change was sufficient to run a 32bit ip multicast routing daemon on a 64bit kernel. Reported-by: Bill Fenner <fenner@aristanetworks.com> Signed-off-by: Eric W. 2011-01-26console: rename acquire/release_console_sem() to console_lock/unlock()Torben Hohn
The -rt patches change the console_semaphore to console_mutex. As a result, a quite large chunk of the patches changes all acquire/release_console_sem() to acquire/release_console_mutex() This commit makes things use more neutral function names which dont make implications about the underlying lock. The only real change is the return value of console_trylock which is inverted from try_acquire_console_sem() This patch also paves the way to switching console_sem from a semaphore to a mutex. 2011-01-25NFS do not find client in NFSv4 pg_authenticateAndy Adamson
The information required to find the nfs_client cooresponding to the incoming back channel request is contained in the NFS layer. Perform minimal checking in the RPC layer pg_authenticate method, and push more detailed checking into the NFS layer where the nfs_client can be found. 2011-01-25NFS: Prevent memory allocation failure in nfsacl_encode()Chuck Lever
nfsacl_encode() allocates memory in certain cases. This of course is not guaranteed to work. Since commit 9f06c719 "SUNRPC: New xdr_streams XDR encoder API", the kernel's XDR encoders can't return a result indicating possibly a failure, so a memory allocation failure in nfsacl_encode() has become fatal (ie, the XDR code Oopses) in some cases. However, the allocated memory is a tiny fixed amount, on the order of 40-50 bytes. We can easily use a stack-allocated buffer for this, with only a wee bit of nose-holding. 2011-01-25NFS: nfsacl_{encode,decode} should return signed integerChuck Lever
Clean up. The nfsacl_encode() and nfsacl_decode() functions return negative errno values, and each call site verifies that the returned value is not negative. Change the synopsis of both of these functions to reflect this usage. Document the synopsis and return values.
