2022-02-07PM: s2idle: ACPI: Fix wakeup interrupts handlingRafael J. Wysocki
After commit e3728b50cd9b ("ACPI: PM: s2idle: Avoid possible race related to the EC GPE") wakeup interrupts occurring immediately after the one discarded by acpi_s2idle_wake() may be missed. Moreover, if the SCI triggers again immediately after the rearming in acpi_s2idle_wake(), that wakeup may be missed too. The problem is that pm_system_irq_wakeup() only calls pm_system_wakeup() when pm_wakeup_irq is 0, but that's not the case any more after the interrupt causing acpi_s2idle_wake() to run until pm_wakeup_irq is cleared by the pm_wakeup_clear() call in s2idle_loop(). However, there may be wakeup interrupts occurring in that time frame and if that happens, they will be missed. To address that issue first move the clearing of pm_wakeup_irq to the point at which it is known that the interrupt causing acpi_s2idle_wake() to tun will be discarded, before rearming the SCI for wakeup. Moreover, because that only reduces the size of the time window in which the issue may manifest itself, allow pm_system_irq_wakeup() to register two second wakeup interrupts in a row and, when discarding the first one, replace it with the second one. The buffer handling in pm_show_wakelocks() is tricky, and hopefully correct. Ensure it really is correct by using sysfs_emit_at() which handles all of the tricky string handling logic in a PAGE_SIZE buffer for us automatically as this is a sysfs file being read from. 2021-12-08PM: hibernate: Allow ACPI hardware signature to be honouredDavid Woodhouse
Theoretically, when the hardware signature in FACS changes, the OS is supposed to gracefully decline to attempt to resume from S4: "If the signature has changed, OSPM will not restore the system context and can boot from scratch" In practice, Windows doesn't do this and many laptop vendors do allow the signature to change especially when docking/undocking, so it would be a bad idea to simply comply with the specification by default in the general case. However, there are use cases where we do want the compliant behaviour and we know it's safe. Specifically, when resuming virtual machines where we know the hypervisor has changed sufficiently that resume will fail. We really want to be able to *tell* the guest kernel not to try, so it boots cleanly and doesn't just crash. This patch provides a way to opt in to the spec-compliant behaviour on the command line. A follow-up patch may do this automatically for certain "known good" machines based on a DMI match, or perhaps just for all hypervisor guests since there's no good reason a hypervisor would change the hardware_signature that it exposes to guests *unless* it wants them to obey the ACPI specification. 2021-11-24PM: hibernate: Fix snapshot partial write lengthsEvan Green
snapshot_write() is inappropriately limiting the amount of data that can be written in cases where a partial page has already been written. For example, one would expect to be able to write 1 byte, then 4095 bytes to the snapshot device, and have both of those complete fully (since now we're aligned to a page again). But what ends up happening is we write 1 byte, then 4094/4095 bytes complete successfully. The reason is that simple_write_to_buffer()'s second argument is the total size of the buffer, not the size of the buffer minus the offset. Since simple_write_to_buffer() accounts for the offset in its implementation, snapshot_write() can just pass the full page size directly down. Commit 39fbef4b0f77 ("PM: hibernate: Get block device exclusively in swsusp_check()") changed the opening mode of the block device to (FMODE_READ | FMODE_EXCL). In the corresponding calls to swsusp_close(), the mode is still just FMODE_READ which triggers the warning in blkdev_flush_mapping() on resume from hibernate. So, use the mode (FMODE_READ | FMODE_EXCL) also when closing the device. Commit 8651f97bd951 ("PM / cpuidle: System resume hang fix with cpuidle") that introduced cpuidle pausing during system suspend did that to work around a platform firmware issue causing systems to hang during resume if CPUs were allowed to enter idle states in the system suspend and resume code paths. However, pausing cpuidle before the last phase of suspending devices is the source of an otherwise arbitrary difference between the suspend-to-idle path and other system suspend variants, so it is cleaner to do that later, before taking secondary CPUs offline (it is still safer to take secondary CPUs offline with cpuidle paused, though). Modify the code accordingly, but in order to avoid code duplication, introduce new wrapper functions, pm_sleep_disable_secondary_cpus() and pm_sleep_enable_secondary_cpus(), to combine cpuidle_pause() and cpuidle_resume(), respectively, with the handling of secondary CPUs during system-wide transitions to sleep states. When building the kernel with sparse enabled 'C=1' the following warnings shows up: kernel/power/swap.c:390:29: warning: incorrect type in assignment (different base types) kernel/power/swap.c:390:29: expected int ret kernel/power/swap.c:390:29: got restricted blk_status_t This is due to function hib_wait_io() returns a 'blk_status_t' which is a bitwise u8. Commit 5416da01ff6e ("PM: hibernate: Remove blk_status_to_errno in hib_wait_io") seemed to have mixed up the return type. However, the 4e4cbee93d56 ("block: switch bios to blk_status_t") actually broke the behaviour by returning the wrong type. Rework so function hib_wait_io() returns a 'int' instead of 'blk_status_t' and make sure to call function blk_status_to_errno(hb->error)' when returning from function hib_wait_io() a int gets returned. 2021-10-20workqueue: Introduce show_one_worker_pool and show_one_workqueue.Imran Khan
Currently show_workqueue_state shows the state of all workqueues and of all worker pools. In certain cases we may need to dump state of only a specific workqueue or worker pool. For example in destroy_workqueue we only need to show state of the workqueue which is getting destroyed. So rename show_workqueue_state to show_all_workqueues(to signify it dumps state of all busy workqueues) and divide it into more granular functions (show_one_workqueue and show_one_worker_pool), that would show states of individual workqueues and worker pools and can be used in cases such as the one mentioned above. Also, as mentioned earlier, make destroy_workqueue dump data pertaining to only the workqueue that is being destroyed and make user(s) of earlier interface(show_workqueue_state), use new interface (show_all_workqueues). 2021-10-05PM: EM: Mark inefficient statesVincent Donnefort
Some SoCs, such as the sd855 have OPPs within the same performance domain, whose cost is higher than others with a higher frequency. Even though those OPPs are interesting from a cooling perspective, it makes no sense to use them when the device can run at full capacity. Those OPPs handicap the performance domain, when choosing the most energy-efficient CPU and are wasting energy. They are inefficient. Hence, add support for such OPPs to the Energy Model. The table can now be read skipping inefficient performance states (and by extension, inefficient OPPs). 2021-08-06PM: EM: Increase energy calculation precisionLukasz Luba
The Energy Model (EM) provides useful information about device power in each performance state to other subsystems like: Energy Aware Scheduler (EAS). The energy calculation in EAS does arithmetic operation based on the EM em_cpu_energy(). Current implementation of that function uses em_perf_state::cost as a pre-computed cost coefficient equal to: cost = power * max_frequency / frequency. The 'power' is expressed in milli-Watts (or in abstract scale). There are corner cases when the EAS energy calculation for two Performance Domains (PDs) return the same value. The EAS compares these values to choose smaller one. It might happen that this values are equal due to rounding error. In such scenario, we need better resolution, e.g. 1000 times better. To provide this possibility increase the resolution in the em_perf_state::cost for 64-bit architectures. The cost of increasing resolution on 32-bit is pretty high (64-bit division) and is not justified since there are no new 32bit big.LITTLE EAS systems expected which would benefit from this higher resolution. This patch allows to avoid the rounding to milli-Watt errors, which might occur in EAS energy estimation for each PD. The rounding error is common for small tasks which have small utilization value. There are two places in the code where it makes a difference: 1. In the find_energy_efficient_cpu() where we are searching for best_delta. We might suffer there when two PDs return the same result, like in the example below. Scenario: Low utilized system e.g. ~200 sum_util for PD0 and ~220 for PD1. There are quite a few small tasks ~10-15 util. These tasks would suffer for the rounding error. These utilization values are typical when running games on Android. One of our partners has reported 5..10mA less battery drain when running with increased resolution. 2020-12-15kernel/power: allow hibernation with page_poison sanity checkingVlastimil Babka
Page poisoning used to be incompatible with hibernation, as the state of poisoned pages was lost after resume, thus enabling CONFIG_HIBERNATION forces CONFIG_PAGE_POISONING_NO_SANITY. For the same reason, the poisoning with zeroes variant CONFIG_PAGE_POISONING_ZERO used to disable hibernation. The latter restriction was removed by commit 1ad1410f632d ("PM / Hibernate: allow hibernation with PAGE_POISONING_ZERO") and similarly for init_on_free by commit 18451f9f9e58 ("PM: hibernate: fix crashes with init_on_free=1") by making sure free pages are cleared after resume. We can use the same mechanism to instead poison free pages with PAGE_POISON after resume. This covers both zero and 0xAA patterns. Thus we can remove the Kconfig restriction that disables page poison sanity checking when hibernation is enabled. 2020-12-15PM: hibernate: make direct map manipulations more explicitMike Rapoport
When DEBUG_PAGEALLOC or ARCH_HAS_SET_DIRECT_MAP is enabled a page may be not present in the direct map and has to be explicitly mapped before it could be copied. Introduce hibernate_map_page() and hibernation_unmap_page() that will explicitly use set_direct_map_{default,invalid}_noflush() for ARCH_HAS_SET_DIRECT_MAP case and debug_pagealloc_{map,unmap}_pages() for DEBUG_PAGEALLOC case. The remapping of the pages in safe_copy_page() presumes that it only changes protection bits in an existing PTE and so it is safe to ignore return value of set_direct_map_{default,invalid}_noflush(). Still, add a pr_warn() so that future changes in set_memory APIs will not silently break hibernation. 2020-11-10PM: EM: Add a flag indicating units of power values in Energy ModelLukasz Luba
There are different platforms and devices which might use different scale for the power values. Kernel sub-systems might need to check if all Energy Model (EM) devices are using the same scale. Address that issue and store the information inside EM for each device. Thanks to that they can be easily compared and proper action triggered.
