2022-04-25no-MMU: expose vmalloc_huge() for alloc_large_system_hash()Linus Torvalds
It turns out that for the CONFIG_MMU=n builds, vmalloc_huge() was never defined, since it's defined in mm/vmalloc.c, which doesn't get built for the no-MMU configurations. Just implement the trivial wrapper for the no-MMU case too. In fact, just make it an alias to the existing __vmalloc() function that has the same signature. Pull MAP_DENYWRITE removal from David Hildenbrand: "Remove all in-tree usage of MAP_DENYWRITE from the kernel and remove VM_DENYWRITE. There are some (minor) user-visible changes: - We no longer deny write access to shared libaries loaded via legacy uselib(); this behavior matches modern user space e.g. dlopen(). - We no longer deny write access to the elf interpreter after exec completed, treating it just like shared libraries (which it often is). - We always deny write access to the file linked via /proc/pid/exe: sys_prctl(PR_SET_MM_MAP/EXE_FILE) will fail if write access to the file cannot be denied, and write access to the file will remain denied until the link is effectivel gone (exec, termination, sys_prctl(PR_SET_MM_MAP/EXE_FILE)) -- just as if exec'ing the file. Cross-compiled for a bunch of architectures (alpha, microblaze, i386, s390x, ...) and verified via ltp that especially the relevant tests (i.e., creat07 and execve04) continue working as expected" * tag 'denywrite-for-5.15' of git://github.com/davidhildenbrand/linux: fs: update documentation of get_write_access() and friends mm: ignore MAP_DENYWRITE in ksys_mmap_pgoff() mm: remove VM_DENYWRITE binfmt: remove in-tree usage of MAP_DENYWRITE kernel/fork: always deny write access to current MM exe_file kernel/fork: factor out replacing the current MM exe_file binfmt: don't use MAP_DENYWRITE when loading shared libraries via uselib()
2021-09-03mm: ignore MAP_DENYWRITE in ksys_mmap_pgoff()David Hildenbrand
Let's also remove masking off MAP_DENYWRITE from ksys_mmap_pgoff(): the last in-tree occurrence of MAP_DENYWRITE is now in LEGACY_MAP_MASK, which accepts the flag e.g., for MAP_SHARED_VALIDATE; however, the flag is ignored throughout the kernel now. 2021-08-23fs: remove mandatory file locking supportJeff Layton
We added CONFIG_MANDATORY_FILE_LOCKING in 2015, and soon after turned it off in Fedora and RHEL8. Several other distros have followed suit. I've heard of one problem in all that time: Someone migrated from an older distro that supported "-o mand" to one that didn't, and the host had a fstab entry with "mand" in it which broke on reboot. They didn't actually _use_ mandatory locking so they just removed the mount option and moved on. This patch rips out mandatory locking support wholesale from the kernel, along with the Kconfig option and the Documentation file. It also changes the mount code to ignore the "mand" mount option instead of erroring out, and to throw a big, ugly warning. Signed-off-by: Jeff Layton <jlayton@kernel.org>

mm/nommu.c: void *__vmalloc(unsigned long size, gfp_t gfp_mask) { /* * You can't specify __GFP_HIGHMEM with kmalloc() since kmalloc() * returns only a logical address. */ return kmalloc(size, (gfp_mask | __GFP_COMP) & ~__GFP_HIGHMEM); } nommu's __vmalloc just uses kmalloc internally and elimitates __GFP_HIGHMEM, so it makes no sense to add __GFP_HIGHMEM for nommu's vmalloc/vzalloc. 2020-08-07mm: remove unnecessary wrapper function do_mmap_pgoff()Peter Collingbourne
The current split between do_mmap() and do_mmap_pgoff() was introduced in commit 1fcfd8db7f82 ("mm, mpx: add "vm_flags_t vm_flags" arg to do_mmap_pgoff()") to support MPX. The wrapper function do_mmap_pgoff() always passed 0 as the value of the vm_flags argument to do_mmap(). However, MPX support has subsequently been removed from the kernel and there were no more direct callers of do_mmap(); all calls were going via do_mmap_pgoff(). Simplify the code by removing do_mmap_pgoff() and changing all callers to directly call do_mmap(), which now no longer takes a vm_flags argument. 2020-03-21x86/mm: split vmalloc_sync_all()Joerg Roedel
Commit 3f8fd02b1bf1 ("mm/vmalloc: Sync unmappings in __purge_vmap_area_lazy()") introduced a call to vmalloc_sync_all() in the vunmap() code-path. While this change was necessary to maintain correctness on x86-32-pae kernels, it also adds additional cycles for architectures that don't need it. Specifically on x86-64 with CONFIG_VMAP_STACK=y some people reported severe performance regressions in micro-benchmarks because it now also calls the x86-64 implementation of vmalloc_sync_all() on vunmap(). But the vmalloc_sync_all() implementation on x86-64 is only needed for newly created mappings. To avoid the unnecessary work on x86-64 and to gain the performance back, split up vmalloc_sync_all() into two functions: * vmalloc_sync_mappings(), and * vmalloc_sync_unmappings() Most call-sites to vmalloc_sync_all() only care about new mappings being synchronized. The only exception is the new call-site added in the above mentioned commit. Shile Zhang directed us to a report of an 80% regression in reaim throughput. 2019-07-12mm: use down_read_killable for locking mmap_sem in access_remote_vmKonstantin Khlebnikov
This function is used by ptrace and proc files like /proc/pid/cmdline and /proc/pid/environ. Access_remote_vm never returns error codes, all errors are ignored and only size of successfully read data is returned. So, if current task was killed we'll simply return 0 (bytes read). Mmap_sem could be locked for a long time or forever if something goes wrong. Using a killable lock permits cleanup of stuck tasks and simplifies investigation. 2019-07-12mm: consolidate the get_user_pages* implementationsChristoph Hellwig
Always build mm/gup.c so that we don't have to provide separate nommu stubs. Also merge the get_user_pages_fast and __get_user_pages_fast stubs when HAVE_FAST_GUP into the main implementations, which will never call the fast path if HAVE_FAST_GUP is not set. This also ensures the new put_user_pages* helpers are available for nommu, as those are currently missing, which would create a problem as soon as we actually grew users for it. 2019-05-14mm: introduce new vm_map_pages() and vm_map_pages_zero() APISouptick Joarder
Patch series "mm: Use vm_map_pages() and vm_map_pages_zero() API", v5. This patch (of 5): Previouly drivers have their own way of mapping range of kernel pages/memory into user vma and this was done by invoking vm_insert_page() within a loop. As this pattern is common across different drivers, it can be generalized by creating new functions and using them across the drivers. vm_map_pages() is the API which can be used to map kernel memory/pages in drivers which have considered vm_pgoff vm_map_pages_zero() is the API which can be used to map a range of kernel memory/pages in drivers which have not considered vm_pgoff. vm_pgoff is passed as default 0 for those drivers. We _could_ then at a later "fix" these drivers which are using vm_map_pages_zero() to behave according to the normal vm_pgoff offsetting simply by removing the _zero suffix on the function name and if that causes regressions, it gives us an easy way to revert. Tested on Rockchip hardware and display is working, including talking to Lima via prime. 2018-10-26mm/gup: cache dev_pagemap while pinning pagesKeith Busch
Getting pages from ZONE_DEVICE memory needs to check the backing device's live-ness, which is tracked in the device's dev_pagemap metadata. This metadata is stored in a radix tree and looking it up adds measurable software overhead. This patch avoids repeating this relatively costly operation when dev_pagemap is used by caching the last dev_pagemap while getting user pages. The gup_benchmark kernel self test reports this reduces time to get user pages to as low as 1/3 of the previous time. False-positive vma_is_anonymous() may lead to crashes: next ffff8801ce5e7040 prev ffff8801d20eca50 mm ffff88019c1e13c0 prot 27 anon_vma ffff88019680cdd8 vm_ops 0000000000000000 pgoff 0 file ffff8801b2ec2d00 private_data 0000000000000000 flags: 0xff(read|write|exec|shared|mayread|maywrite|mayexec|mayshare) ------------[ cut here ]------------ kernel BUG at mm/memory.c:1422! invalid opcode: 0000 [#1] SMP KASAN CPU: 0 PID: 18486 Comm: syz-executor3 Not tainted 4.18.0-rc3+ #136 Hardware name: Google Google Compute Engine/Google Compute Engine, BIOS Google 01/01/2011 RIP: 0010:zap_pmd_range mm/memory.c:1421 [inline] RIP: 0010:zap_pud_range mm/memory.c:1466 [inline] RIP: 0010:zap_p4d_range mm/memory.c:1487 [inline] RIP: 0010:unmap_page_range+0x1c18/0x2220 mm/memory.c:1508 Call Trace: unmap_single_vma+0x1a0/0x310 mm/memory.c:1553 zap_page_range_single+0x3cc/0x580 mm/memory.c:1644 unmap_mapping_range_vma mm/memory.c:2792 [inline] unmap_mapping_range_tree mm/memory.c:2813 [inline] unmap_mapping_pages+0x3a7/0x5b0 mm/memory.c:2845 unmap_mapping_range+0x48/0x60 mm/memory.c:2880 truncate_pagecache+0x54/0x90 mm/truncate.c:800 truncate_setsize+0x70/0xb0 mm/truncate.c:826 simple_setattr+0xe9/0x110 fs/libfs.c:409 notify_change+0xf13/0x10f0 fs/attr.c:335 do_truncate+0x1ac/0x2b0 fs/open.c:63 do_sys_ftruncate+0x492/0x560 fs/open.c:205 __do_sys_ftruncate fs/open.c:215 [inline] __se_sys_ftruncate fs/open.c:213 [inline] __x64_sys_ftruncate+0x59/0x80 fs/open.c:213 do_syscall_64+0x1b9/0x820 arch/x86/entry/common.c:290 entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x49/0xbe Reproducer: #include <stdio.h> #include <stddef.h> #include <stdint.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <string.h> #include <sys/types.h> #include <sys/stat.h> #include <sys/ioctl.h> #include <sys/mman.h> #include <unistd.h> #include <fcntl.h> #define KCOV_INIT_TRACE _IOR('c', 1, unsigned long) #define KCOV_ENABLE _IO('c', 100) #define KCOV_DISABLE _IO('c', 101) #define COVER_SIZE (1024<<10) #define KCOV_TRACE_PC 0 #define KCOV_TRACE_CMP 1 int main(int argc, char **argv) { int fd; unsigned long *cover; system("mount -t debugfs none /sys/kernel/debug"); fd = open("/sys/kernel/debug/kcov", O_RDWR); ioctl(fd, KCOV_INIT_TRACE, COVER_SIZE); cover = mmap(NULL, COVER_SIZE * sizeof(unsigned long), PROT_READ | PROT_WRITE, MAP_SHARED, fd, 0); munmap(cover, COVER_SIZE * sizeof(unsigned long)); cover = mmap(NULL, COVER_SIZE * sizeof(unsigned long), PROT_READ | PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE, fd, 0); memset(cover, 0, COVER_SIZE * sizeof(unsigned long)); ftruncate(fd, 3UL << 20); return 0; } This can be fixed by assigning anonymous VMAs own vm_ops and not relying on it being NULL. If ->mmap() failed to set ->vm_ops, mmap_region() will set it to dummy_vm_ops. This way we will have non-NULL ->vm_ops for all VMAs. 2018-07-21mm: make vm_area_alloc() initialize core fieldsLinus Torvalds
Like vm_area_dup(), it initializes the anon_vma_chain head, and the basic mm pointer. The rest of the fields end up being different for different users, although the plan is to also initialize the 'vm_ops' field to a dummy entry. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2018-07-21mm: make vm_area_dup() actually copy the old vma dataLinus Torvalds

2018-07-21mm: use helper functions for allocating and freeing vm_area structsLinus Torvalds
The vm_area_struct is one of the most fundamental memory management objects, but the management of it is entirely open-coded evertwhere, ranging from allocation and freeing (using kmem_cache_[z]alloc and kmem_cache_free) to initializing all the fields. We want to unify this in order to end up having some unified initialization of the vmas, and the first step to this is to at least have basic allocation functions. Right now those functions are literally just wrappers around the kmem_cache_*() calls. This is a purely mechanical conversion: # new vma: kmem_cache_zalloc(vm_area_cachep, GFP_KERNEL) -> vm_area_alloc() # copy old vma kmem_cache_alloc(vm_area_cachep, GFP_KERNEL) -> vm_area_dup(old) # free vma kmem_cache_free(vm_area_cachep, vma) -> vm_area_free(vma) to the point where the old vma passed in to the vm_area_dup() function isn't even used yet (because I've left all the old manual initialization alone). 2018-06-07mm: use new return type vm_fault_tSouptick Joarder
Use new return type vm_fault_t for fault handler in struct vm_operations_struct. For now, this is just documenting that the function returns a VM_FAULT value rather than an errno. Once all instances are converted, vm_fault_t will become a distinct type. 2018-04-02Merge branch 'syscalls-next' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/brodo/linux Pull removal of in-kernel calls to syscalls from Dominik Brodowski: "System calls are interaction points between userspace and the kernel. Therefore, system call functions such as sys_xyzzy() or compat_sys_xyzzy() should only be called from userspace via the syscall table, but not from elsewhere in the kernel. At least on 64-bit x86, it will likely be a hard requirement from v4.17 onwards to not call system call functions in the kernel: It is better to use use a different calling convention for system calls there, where struct pt_regs is decoded on-the-fly in a syscall wrapper which then hands processing over to the actual syscall function. This means that only those parameters which are actually needed for a specific syscall are passed on during syscall entry, instead of filling in six CPU registers with random user space content all the time (which may cause serious trouble down the call chain). Those x86-specific patches will be pushed through the x86 tree in the near future. Moreover, rules on how data may be accessed may differ between kernel data and user data. This is another reason why calling sys_xyzzy() is generally a bad idea, and -- at most -- acceptable in arch-specific code. This patchset removes all in-kernel calls to syscall functions in the kernel with the exception of arch/. On top of this, it cleans up the three places where many syscalls are referenced or prototyped, namely kernel/sys_ni.c, include/linux/syscalls.h and include/linux/compat.h" * 'syscalls-next' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/brodo/linux: (109 commits) bpf: whitelist all syscalls for error injection kernel/sys_ni: remove {sys_,sys_compat} from cond_syscall definitions kernel/sys_ni: sort cond_syscall() entries syscalls/x86: auto-create compat_sys_*() prototypes syscalls: sort syscall prototypes in include/linux/compat.h net: remove compat_sys_*() prototypes from net/compat.h syscalls: sort syscall prototypes in include/linux/syscalls.h kexec: move sys_kexec_load() prototype to syscalls.h x86/sigreturn: use SYSCALL_DEFINE0 x86: fix sys_sigreturn() return type to be long, not unsigned long x86/ioport: add ksys_ioperm() helper; remove in-kernel calls to sys_ioperm() mm: add ksys_readahead() helper; remove in-kernel calls to sys_readahead() mm: add ksys_mmap_pgoff() helper; remove in-kernel calls to sys_mmap_pgoff() mm: add ksys_fadvise64_64() helper; remove in-kernel call to sys_fadvise64_64() fs: add ksys_fallocate() wrapper; remove in-kernel calls to sys_fallocate() fs: add ksys_p{read,write}64() helpers; remove in-kernel calls to syscalls fs: add ksys_truncate() wrapper; remove in-kernel calls to sys_truncate() fs: add ksys_sync_file_range helper(); remove in-kernel calls to syscall kernel: add ksys_setsid() helper; remove in-kernel call to sys_setsid() kernel: add ksys_unshare() helper; remove in-kernel calls to sys_unshare() ...
2018-04-02mm: add ksys_mmap_pgoff() helper; remove in-kernel calls to sys_mmap_pgoff()Dominik Brodowski
Using this helper allows us to avoid the in-kernel calls to the sys_mmap_pgoff() syscall. The ksys_ prefix denotes that this function is meant as a drop-in replacement for the syscall. In particular, it uses the same calling convention as sys_mmap_pgoff(). This patch is part of a series which removes in-kernel calls to syscalls. On this basis, the syscall entry path can be streamlined. 2018-03-16mm: remove blackfin MPU supportArnd Bergmann
The CONFIG_MPU option was only defined on blackfin, and that architecture is now being removed, so the respective code can be simplified.
