2024-03-05dpll: move all dpll<>netdev helpers to dpll codeJakub Kicinski
Older versions of GCC really want to know the full definition of the type involved in rcu_assign_pointer(). struct dpll_pin is defined in a local header, net/core can't reach it. Move all the netdev <> dpll code into dpll, where the type is known. Otherwise we'd need multiple function calls to jump between the compilation units. This is the same problem the commit under fixes was trying to address, but with rcu_assign_pointer() not rcu_dereference(). Some of the exports are not needed, networking core can't be a module, we only need exports for the helpers used by drivers. 2024-03-04page_pool: fix netlink dump stop/resumeJakub Kicinski
If message fills up we need to stop writing. 'break' will only get us out of the iteration over pools of a single netdev, we need to also stop walking netdevs. This results in either infinite dump, or missing pools, depending on whether message full happens on the last netdev (infinite dump) or non-last (missing pools). 2024-02-28rtnetlink: fix error logic of IFLA_BRIDGE_FLAGS writing backLin Ma
In the commit d73ef2d69c0d ("rtnetlink: let rtnl_bridge_setlink checks IFLA_BRIDGE_MODE length"), an adjustment was made to the old loop logic in the function `rtnl_bridge_setlink` to enable the loop to also check the length of the IFLA_BRIDGE_MODE attribute. However, this adjustment removed the `break` statement and led to an error logic of the flags writing back at the end of this function. if (have_flags) memcpy(nla_data(attr), &flags, sizeof(flags)); // attr should point to IFLA_BRIDGE_FLAGS NLA !!! Before the mentioned commit, the `attr` is granted to be IFLA_BRIDGE_FLAGS. However, this is not necessarily true fow now as the updated loop will let the attr point to the last NLA, even an invalid NLA which could cause overflow writes. This patch introduces a new variable `br_flag` to save the NLA pointer that points to IFLA_BRIDGE_FLAGS and uses it to resolve the mentioned error logic. 2024-02-26dpll: rely on rcu for netdev_dpll_pin()Eric Dumazet
This fixes a possible UAF in if_nlmsg_size(), which can run without RTNL. Add rcu protection to "struct dpll_pin" Move netdev_dpll_pin() from netdevice.h to dpll.h to decrease name pollution. 2024-02-21net: implement lockless setsockopt(SO_PEEK_OFF)Eric Dumazet
syzbot reported a lockdep violation [1] involving af_unix support of SO_PEEK_OFF. Since SO_PEEK_OFF is inherently not thread safe (it uses a per-socket sk_peek_off field), there is really no point to enforce a pointless thread safety in the kernel. After this patch : - setsockopt(SO_PEEK_OFF) no longer acquires the socket lock. - skb_consume_udp() no longer has to acquire the socket lock. - af_unix no longer needs a special version of sk_set_peek_off(), because it does not lock u->iolock anymore. As a followup, we could replace prot->set_peek_off to be a boolean and avoid an indirect call, since we always use sk_set_peek_off(). 2024-01-22net: fix removing a namespace with conflicting altnamesJakub Kicinski
Mark reports a BUG() when a net namespace is removed. kernel BUG at net/core/dev.c:11520! Physical interfaces moved outside of init_net get "refunded" to init_net when that namespace disappears. The main interface name may get overwritten in the process if it would have conflicted. We need to also discard all conflicting altnames. Recent fixes addressed ensuring that altnames get moved with the main interface, which surfaced this problem. 2024-01-21udp: fix busy pollingEric Dumazet
Generic sk_busy_loop_end() only looks at sk->sk_receive_queue for presence of packets. Problem is that for UDP sockets after blamed commit, some packets could be present in another queue: udp_sk(sk)->reader_queue In some cases, a busy poller could spin until timeout expiration, even if some packets are available in udp_sk(sk)->reader_queue. v3: - make sk_busy_loop_end() nicer (Willem) v2: - add a READ_ONCE(sk->sk_family) in sk_is_inet() to avoid KCSAN splats. - add a sk_is_inet() check in sk_is_udp() (Willem feedback) - add a sk_is_inet() check in sk_is_tcp(). 2024-01-11Revert "net: rtnetlink: Enslave device before bringing it up"Nicolas Dichtel
This reverts commit a4abfa627c3865c37e036bccb681619a50d3d93c. The patch broke: > ip link set dummy0 up > ip link set dummy0 master bond0 down This last command is useful to be able to enslave an interface with only one netlink message. After discussion, there is no good reason to support: > ip link set dummy0 down > ip link set dummy0 master bond0 up because the bond interface already set the slave up when it is up. Core & protocols: - Analyze and reorganize core networking structs (socks, netdev, netns, mibs) to optimize cacheline consumption and set up build time warnings to safeguard against future header changes This improves TCP performances with many concurrent connections up to 40% - Add page-pool netlink-based introspection, exposing the memory usage and recycling stats. This helps indentify bad PP users and possible leaks - Refine TCP/DCCP source port selection to no longer favor even source port at connect() time when IP_LOCAL_PORT_RANGE is set. This lowers the time taken by connect() for hosts having many active connections to the same destination - Refactor the TCP bind conflict code, shrinking related socket structs - Refactor TCP SYN-Cookie handling, as a preparation step to allow arbitrary SYN-Cookie processing via eBPF - Tune optmem_max for 0-copy usage, increasing the default value to 128KB and namespecifying it - Allow coalescing for cloned skbs coming from page pools, improving RX performances with some common configurations - Reduce extension header parsing overhead at GRO time - Add bridge MDB bulk deletion support, allowing user-space to request the deletion of matching entries - Reorder nftables struct members, to keep data accessed by the datapath first - Introduce TC block ports tracking and use. This allows supporting multicast-like behavior at the TC layer - Remove UAPI support for retired TC qdiscs (dsmark, CBQ and ATM) and classifiers (RSVP and tcindex) - More data-race annotations - Extend the diag interface to dump TCP bound-only sockets - Conditional notification of events for TC qdisc class and actions - Support for WPAN dynamic associations with nearby devices, to form a sub-network using a specific PAN ID - Implement SMCv2.1 virtual ISM device support - Add support for Batman-avd mulicast packet type BPF: - Tons of verifier improvements: - BPF register bounds logic and range support along with a large test suite - log improvements - complete precision tracking support for register spills - track aligned STACK_ZERO cases as imprecise spilled registers. 2024-01-02net: Implement missing getsockopt(SO_TIMESTAMPING_NEW)Jörn-Thorben Hinz
Commit 9718475e6908 ("socket: Add SO_TIMESTAMPING_NEW") added the new socket option SO_TIMESTAMPING_NEW. Setting the option is handled in sk_setsockopt(), querying it was not handled in sk_getsockopt(), though. Following remarks on an earlier submission of this patch, keep the old behavior of getsockopt(SO_TIMESTAMPING_OLD) which returns the active flags even if they actually have been set through SO_TIMESTAMPING_NEW. The new getsockopt(SO_TIMESTAMPING_NEW) is stricter, returning flags only if they have been set through the same option. 2024-01-01net: phy: Introduce ethernet link topology representationMaxime Chevallier
Link topologies containing multiple network PHYs attached to the same net_device can be found when using a PHY as a media converter for use with an SFP connector, on which an SFP transceiver containing a PHY can be used. With the current model, the transceiver's PHY can't be used for operations such as cable testing, timestamping, macsec offload, etc. The reason being that most of the logic for these configuration, coming from either ethtool netlink or ioctls tend to use netdev->phydev, which in multi-phy systems will reference the PHY closest to the MAC. Introduce a numbering scheme allowing to enumerate PHY devices that belong to any netdev, which can in turn allow userspace to take more precise decisions with regard to each PHY's configuration. The numbering is maintained per-netdev, in a phy_device_list. The numbering works similarly to a netdevice's ifindex, with identifiers that are only recycled once INT_MAX has been reached. This prevents races that could occur between PHY listing and SFP transceiver removal/insertion. The identifiers are assigned at phy_attach time, as the numbering depends on the netdevice the phy is attached to. 2023-12-29genetlink: Use internal flags for multicast groupsIdo Schimmel
As explained in commit e03781879a0d ("drop_monitor: Require 'CAP_SYS_ADMIN' when joining "events" group"), the "flags" field in the multicast group structure reuses uAPI flags despite the field not being exposed to user space. This makes it impossible to extend its use without adding new uAPI flags, which is inappropriate for internal kernel checks. Solve this by adding internal flags (i.e., "GENL_MCAST_*") and convert the existing users to use them instead of the uAPI flags. Tested using the reproducers in commit 44ec98ea5ea9 ("psample: Require 'CAP_NET_ADMIN' when joining "packets" group") and commit e03781879a0d ("drop_monitor: Require 'CAP_SYS_ADMIN' when joining "events" group"). 2023-12-21net: check dev->gso_max_size in gso_features_check()Eric Dumazet
Some drivers might misbehave if TSO packets get too big. GVE for instance uses a 16bit field in its TX descriptor, and will do bad things if a packet is bigger than 2^16 bytes. Linux TCP stack honors dev->gso_max_size, but there are other ways for too big packets to reach an ndo_start_xmit() handler : virtio_net, af_packet, GRO... Add a generic check in gso_features_check() and fallback to GSO when needed. gso_max_size was added in the blamed commit. 2023-12-21net: avoid build bug in skb extension length calculationThomas Weißschuh
GCC seems to incorrectly fail to evaluate skb_ext_total_length() at compile time under certain conditions. The issue even occurs if all values in skb_ext_type_len[] are "0", ruling out the possibility of an actual overflow. As the patch has been in mainline since v6.6 without triggering the problem it seems to be a very uncommon occurrence. As the issue only occurs when -fno-tree-loop-im is specified as part of CFLAGS_GCOV, disable the BUILD_BUG_ON() only when building with coverage reporting enabled. 2023-12-20net: sched: Make tc-related drop reason more flexible for remaining qdiscsVictor Nogueira
Incrementing on Daniel's patch[1], make tc-related drop reason more flexible for remaining qdiscs - that is, all qdiscs aside from clsact. In essence, the drop reason will be set by cls_api and act_api in case any error occurred in the data path. With that, we can give the user more detailed information so that they can distinguish between a policy drop or an error drop. https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/bpf/bpf-next Alexei Starovoitov says: ==================== pull-request: bpf-next 2023-12-18 This PR is larger than usual and contains changes in various parts of the kernel. The main changes are: 1) Fix kCFI bugs in BPF, from Peter Zijlstra. End result: all forms of indirect calls from BPF into kernel and from kernel into BPF work with CFI enabled. This allows BPF to work with CONFIG_FINEIBT=y. 2) Introduce BPF token object, from Andrii Nakryiko. It adds an ability to delegate a subset of BPF features from privileged daemon (e.g., systemd) through special mount options for userns-bound BPF FS to a trusted unprivileged application. The design accommodates suggestions from Christian Brauner and Paul Moore. Example: $ sudo mkdir -p /sys/fs/bpf/token $ sudo mount -t bpf bpffs /sys/fs/bpf/token \ -o delegate_cmds=prog_load:MAP_CREATE \ -o delegate_progs=kprobe \ -o delegate_attachs=xdp 3) Various verifier improvements and fixes, from Andrii Nakryiko, Andrei Matei. - Complete precision tracking support for register spills - Fix verification of possibly-zero-sized stack accesses - Fix access to uninit stack slots - Track aligned STACK_ZERO cases as imprecise spilled registers. It improves the verifier "instructions processed" metric from single digit to 50-60% for some programs. - Fix verifier retval logic 4) Support for VLAN tag in XDP hints, from Larysa Zaremba. 5) Allocate BPF trampoline via bpf_prog_pack mechanism, from Song Liu. End result: better memory utilization and lower I$ miss for calls to BPF via BPF trampoline. 6) Fix race between BPF prog accessing inner map and parallel delete, from Hou Tao. 7) Add bpf_xdp_get_xfrm_state() kfunc, from Daniel Xu. It allows BPF interact with IPSEC infra. The intent is to support software RSS (via XDP) for the upcoming ipsec pcpu work. Experiments on AWS demonstrate single tunnel pcpu ipsec reaching line rate on 100G ENA nics. 8) Expand bpf_cgrp_storage to support cgroup1 non-attach, from Yafang Shao. 9) BPF file verification via fsverity, from Song Liu. 2023-12-17skbuff: Optimization of SKB coalescing for page poolLiang Chen
In order to address the issues encountered with commit 1effe8ca4e34 ("skbuff: fix coalescing for page_pool fragment recycling"), the combination of the following condition was excluded from skb coalescing: from->pp_recycle = 1 from->cloned = 1 to->pp_recycle = 1 However, with page pool environments, the aforementioned combination can be quite common(ex. NetworkMananger may lead to the additional packet_type being registered, thus the cloning). In scenarios with a higher number of small packets, it can significantly affect the success rate of coalescing. For example, considering packets of 256 bytes size, our comparison of coalescing success rate is as follows: Without page pool: 70% With page pool: 13% Consequently, this has an impact on performance: Without page pool: 2.57 Gbits/sec With page pool: 2.26 Gbits/sec Therefore, it seems worthwhile to optimize this scenario and enable coalescing of this particular combination. To achieve this, we need to ensure the correct increment of the "from" SKB page's page pool reference count (pp_ref_count). Following this optimization, the success rate of coalescing measured in our environment has improved as follows: With page pool: 60% This success rate is approaching the rate achieved without using page pool, and the performance has also been improved: With page pool: 2.52 Gbits/sec Below is the performance comparison for small packets before and after this optimization. We observe no impact to packets larger than 4K. packet size before after improved (bytes) (Gbits/sec) (Gbits/sec) 128 1.19 1.27 7.13% 256 2.26 2.52 11.75% 512 4.13 4.81 16.50% 1024 6.17 6.73 9.05% 2048 14.54 15.47 6.45% 4096 25.44 27.87 9.52% Signed-off-by: Liang Chen <liangchen.linux@gmail.com> Reviewed-by: Yunsheng Lin <linyunsheng@huawei.com> Suggested-by: Jason Wang <jasowang@redhat.com> Reviewed-by: Mina Almasry <almasrymina@google.com> Signed-off-by: David S.
